  • State Fire Marshal enforces the International Fire Code (IFC) with local amendments.

3. Volunteer Fire Departments

  • Governed under SC Code of Laws § 23-9-25, which outlines qualifications, insurance requirements, and state support for volunteer departments.
  • Santee Fire District operates as a fire protection district, which is legally recognized and funded through local tax revenue (per referendum in 1982).

4. Fire Incident Reporting

  • Fire departments must submit incident reports to the South Carolina Fire Incident Reporting System (SCFIRS) in compliance with the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) standards.

5. Burn Permits & Outdoor Fires

  • Controlled burns are regulated under SC Code § 48-35-10.
  • Residents must obtain a burn permit and follow local ordinances regarding burn bans, weather conditions, and safety zones.

6. Fireworks and Public Events

  • Fireworks displays and public gatherings with open flames require special permits and inspections.
  • Permits are reviewed by the local Fire Chief and must comply with NFPA standards and state law.

7. Emergency Medical Response

  • Santee Fire Service District operates under Orangeburg County’s EMS protocols and is required to follow DHEC regulations for first response and basic life support services.

Local Ordinances & Agreements
